SINGAPORE: Newer entrants into Indonesia's mining sector will face stiffer regulations with a new ban on raw material exports in a blow to local and foreign commodities producers that analysts said may even affect economic growth.
A flat export tax of 20 per cent on 14 mineral ores was confirmed on Tuesday by the Indonesian Finance Ministry. It will issue a decree later this week to the effect.
The tax applies to mining companies that obtained permits, known as IUPs, under a 2009 Mining Law.
Large-scale miners, such as Freeport and Newmont, which operate under different licence structures, will conditionally be able to export until 2014.
At that point, all raw mineral exports will be banned.
These contracts permit them to continue exports until 2014, when all Indonesian ore exports will be banned.
The regulation has been fast-tracked, originally intended to take effect in 2014, to the surprise of many companies.
