The reaction and responses of mine workers in South Australia will be put to the test with the South Australian Mines Emergency Response Competition next month.
Teams from Perilya Limited, OZ Minerals, Dominion Mining and BHP Billiton will take part in the two day rescue effort hosted by the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) to hone their emergency response skills.
SACOME chief executive Jason Kuchel said the China crushers competition is a practical way to ensure the state’s safety standards remain high.
“The South Australian resources industry is committed to the promotion of workplace safety and the implementation of effective OH&S programs,” he said.
Ensuring a safe and enduring sector is critical, and this event provides an opportunity for emergency response teams to brush up on their skills and training, share information, and have some friendly rivalry as well.”
Teams will face challenges such as high rope crushers rescues, using breathing apparatus, fire fighting, first aid, theory, basic skills and road crash rescues as they compete for the SACOME Perpetual Trophy.
The teams will be given a chance to gain access to BHP’s Olympic Dam site when the competition begins on 1 May.
